4-H Speech Contest Winner
The 4-H held their county-wide speech contest on Saturday, December 3. Emily Holmes was named the Grand Champion for the county 5th Grade. She is a student in Mrs. Williams' class. We would like to give Emily a big CONGRATULATIONS for her accomplishment.

Music Program
The 2nd and 3rd grade students performed the program "Christmas at the OK Corral". Both groups did a fantastic job and the performances were done in front of a pack cafeteria.

Portland Community Foundation Grant
Ms. Bates' class received one of the Portland Community Foundation Grants again this year. Ms. Bates has applied for and received this grant for several years. She uses the money in her class to promote reading.

Storyteller
The students listened to Mary Jo Huff, storyteller, during a program at school and later that night the parents were able to enjoy her storytelling at the Title I family meeting.
Veterans Day
The 4th and 5th Grade students at Clyde Riggs were honored to listen to local Veterans and recognize them for their service.

Local workers visit the First Grade
The first graders are learning about local community workers, so on Friday representatives from the Portland Police and Fire Departments and CEMC came to our school. They discussed their jobs and showed off some of their equipment they use in their line work.

Wheels In Motion
The Portland Rotary Club came to school to present the first bike to a student for the 2011-2012 school year. The student is chosen that shows positive areas of citizenship, academics (school work), reliability and helpfulness to others. Paul Fuqua was the representative for the Portland Rotary Club.
Fire Prevention Program
The Portland Fire Department and the Highland Volunteer Fire Department came to school and presented the annual Fire Prevention Month program. This year the visit included Sarge, the Highland Volunteer Fire Department's Bloodhound.

Book Fair Family Night
Clyde Riggs held its Fall Family Night at the Book Fair. We had a great turnout to the book fair and to the spaghetti supper. Thank you to everyone that attended.

Coordinated School Health BMI Screening
The Sumner County School System does BMI Screenings yearly on our Kindergarten, Second Grade and Fourth Grade students. This is done in conjunction with the Tennessee Coordinated School Health Program. This year several of our students were filmed during their screening to provide a training video showing other students the process of the BMI screening. The screenings involved checking the students blood pressure, heart rate, height and weight.

Kindergarten Parent Boo-Hoo Breakfast
Several parents attended the back to school Boo-Hoo Breakfast today. Many of the staff members were introduced to the parents and infomation about the school was provided to help parents make it though their child's first year of school successfully.

Parent Back to School Night
